Building a marketing legacy

How will people remember you? Building a legacy of your own requires your attention to the details that tender service, love of people, and authenticity.  Who are you? What message are you sending to your prospective clients and customers?

Establishing a personal brand will help you find success, in any industry. No longer are the days when all you had to do in order to succeed was be a good salesperson. Today, we need to be better marketers. The marketplace is on information overload.  Information all the time – twitter tweets out the news as soon as it happens, facebook posts links that travel around the globe almost instantly, blogs, diggs, alltop news resources, I could go on, right?  All of this presents a challenge in keeping your target audience’s attention and standing out from the crowd.

My advice is this:

In ALL your marketing - provide valuable CONTENT to your audience
Be AUTHENTIC

Marketing “Lifestyles”

Diversity in your MarketingIn this day and time, in our businesses we are all looking for “the one thing”.  That one tool or product that will get our marketing done, bring us prospects, make the sale, clean our house, make us happy….I could go on.  The problem with that concept is that in a diverse business market, there is MORE than just ONE way.  There are MANY.  Many ways to get leads, to market your product, to brand your business, to be happy, to be entertained…get the idea?

I want to talk to you about diversity in your marketing.  Just like there are many types of customers out there, there are also many ways to reach them.  The failure to reach your customer might be in the method you are using.  Look at your market segment.  Are they boomers?  Are they just out of college?  Where do they live?  Country?  City?  Uptown?  Suburbs?  Believe it or not, where your prospect lives tells a big story about their lifestyle and their preferences when it comes to how they make their purchases and how they communicate.

In executing a marketing plan, it is important to be as diverse as the market you serve.  Do not put all your eggs in one basket!  Spread your marketing message out over a number of marketing venues:  social networking, email, print, sponsorships, and good old-fashioned call phones to set up a lunch or one-on-one.  There is business waiting for you in all types of marketing.  Depending upon your target market, you may want to focus on social networking to build relationships, or you may want to use the US Mail to deliver nice business letters offering your services.  You have to know your customer. Going GREEN in your Marketing is more than not wasting paper! It’s about using the resources that are available that saves you time and money. It’s using online systems.

Going GreenThe first thing I think about when I think “GREEN” (other than the lush landscape you would expect to see in Switzerland or New Zealand) is saving energy, lowering my consumption of energy and being kind to our planet. Expanding that thought is to think GREEN in our businesses – and what better green to conserve than our dollars and our time that is worth money!

Today we are witnessing the restructuring of traditional marketing and advertising methods in business.  There are some companies that are holding on tight to old methods, but I am afraid these methods are ending.  The consumer is online, for everything.  Taking our marketing online to be found by our target audience should be the #1 priority in our business and marketing plans.

They tell me things like, “Yeah, they said we should start with a blog, and we said, ‘like the blog we already have?’” But what comes next is rarely a simple choice. I wanted to take you through some thoughts on what the basic building blocks of social media might be for a business (in the context of marketing, but then stretching a bit further out).

You have been given one magical wish . . .

A mainstream blogger once asked the question of  thousands of their readers, “If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?”.  Here are a few of the answers:

If you could change one thing in the world today what would it be?

  • I’d make it so people would actually love other people. That would end all heartbreak, crime, war, lawsuits, abuse. Everything.  It’s a lack of love that causes it in the first place.
  • Stop War all over the world
  • War and pedophiles
  • I would remove politics from the world. Every problem would be solved instantly
  • No more hunger

All good answers, but unfortunately, most are nothing more than magical wishes – beyond our control, or ability to really make happen.  Who wouldn’t change world hunger if they could, or stop all wars?  If we had that one wish from the Jeanie in the bottle, we would all make good use of it!  But there is no Jeanie in the bottle, at least not in my house.

Now if you did have just one thing you could change, and possessed the ability to make it happen, the talent, the knowledge, the means, what would that be?  And what kind of long term effect would it have on your life and business?  Did you know that CHANGING ONE THING is all that is necessary in order to bring about a magical effect into your life?  CHANGING ONE THING can reinvent your own reality and thus the reality of those around you.  No Jeanie in the bottle necessary!

Ok, so how?  Is there a formula that successful and powerful people use to make things happen?  The answer of course is yes.  There are numerous “formulas” that you can use to set and achieve your goals for the rest of your life – and all have a few common denominators. From my experience, I know that successful people are masters of their time and their actions, their mind and their decisions.  In order to possess that kind of control, one MUST follow certain routines that have proven to be successful.  You can too.  By following the actions in the list below, you can achieve positive, successful results that go far beyond those of the average person.  Here you go:

Decide What You Want
Step number one, decide exactly what it is you want in each part of your life and in your business. Become a “meaningful specific” rather than a “wandering generality.”

Write It Down
Second, write it down, clearly and in detail. Always think on paper. A goal that is not in writing is not a goal at all. It is merely a wish and it has no energy behind it.

Set a Deadline
Third, set a deadline for your goal. A deadline acts as a “forcing system” in your subconscious mind. It motivates you to do the things necessary to make your goal come true. If it is a big enough goal, set sub-deadlines as well. Don’t leave this to chance.

Make a List
Fourth, make a list of everything that you can think of that you are going to have to do to achieve your goal. When you think of new tasks and activities, write them on your list until your list is complete.

Organize Your List
Fifth, organize your list into a plan. Decide what you will have to do first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and what is less important. And then write out your plan on paper, the same way you would develop a blueprint to build your dream house.  Create a schedule to help you accomplish the things on your list.

Take Action
The sixth step is for you to take action on your plan. Do something. Do anything. But get busy. Get going.   Follow your schedule!

Do Something Every Day
Do something every single day that moves you in the direction of your most important goal at the moment. Develop the discipline of doing something 365 days each year that is moving you forward. You will be astonished at how much you accomplish when you utilize this formula in your life every single day

There are so many distractions in our lives today.  Creating our goals, choosing our plan and working that plan will keep you focussed and consistent and that is the key to success!

Got Money?

Don’t let bad news distract you from the many positive steps you can take each day…

No matter what industry you are in, by the time you arrive at work, you’ve probably been exposed to a barrage of bad news:  more layoffs, bankruptcies, killings, hurricanes, bombings, astronomical gas prices, declining stock prices, decreasing sales…need I go on?

It’s enough that we have to deal with all this stuff just through our contact with the world, so you have to accentuate the positive.

Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by negative economic events beyond your control.  Instead, focus on the many steps within your control you can take to generate sales today and prepare for a more prosperous tomorrow, here some basics of what you can do.

  • Customer Follow-up: start each day by contacting three recent customers and finding out how satisfied they are with their purchases.  Thank them for choosing you and ask them what you can do to make them even happier next time.  You will undoubtedly uncover additional unmet needs while generating valuable leads and referrals.
  • Website: does it contain both open content accessible to all visitors and premium content that has limited access “high-octane” information used as a registration incentive and reward for buying from you?  Are they up to date?
  • Social Media Fun –  Twitter, YouTube and Facebook: share your positive outlook to your friends and followers on your social networking site, look for and provide uplifting content that will make the online world a better place and make friends in the process!  Leverage these marketing outlets to share YOUR story and personality.  And by all means have fun!
  • Synergy: explore ways to add Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Plaxo, Blogger, or any other social media to your overall marketing plan.  Drive visitors to your web site or blog, keep customers informed using on-line collaboration and communications, email and on-line newsletters. Diversify your marketing and spread your marketing message across all available channels.

Bottom line?

  • Keep it real!
  • Focus on what will change the world
  • DO NOT forget to stay in touch with your clients, this is the GOLD!
  • Have fun and love what you do!

With all the options we have to share our information online, it can be a bit confusing on where to start first. In marketing your business, products, services or real estate listings, emails and newsletters are great and shouldn’t be left out. If you are a real estate professional, the many web feeds available to real estate search engines are a plus, but what about the new social networking sites? Did you know that about 200 million people accessed Facebook today? Millions are tweeting on Twitter everyday and YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, following Google. No matter what business you are in, It is time to incorporate social networking as part of your marketing distribution! It isn’t hard, but it will take some time. So set aside a few hours this week to get set up.

To help you get started, here is my simple “How To” on posting your services or listings online to the top mainstream social networking sites. But take note, you have to have your tools in order FIRST so you can rock and roll with the postings!

How to Post real estate listings to the Top Social Networking (SN) Sites -Feeding your Twitter, YouTube and Facebook Content

A: Tools Needed:

1 – For real estate agents, a great listing – or if you don’t have a listing yet, an article about your niche area.  For other businesses a well written informational article on your favorite subject, or a well written sales letter promoting a special or product offering

2 – MLS listing information and MLS number or product/service information code

3 – At least 15 photos of your listing, interior, exterior and detail, or several photos with close up detail of your product or service

4 – Well written copy for the description, no more than 135 characters

5 – A powerful headline, something with searchable keywords in it

6 – Accounts set up for:

Twitter.com, Facebook.com, Youtube.com, LinkedIn.com, Plaxo.com,Animoto.com, Friendfeed.com, igoogle.com,
myspace.com, blogger.com, wordpress.com, Trulia.com, Addthis.com

7 – A good mail list of your contacts, SOI, clients and their email addresses

B: Feed your listing to the world of SN sites

1 – Upload your listing as usual to MLS using the well written copy for the description and the beautiful 15 photos

2 – Create an out of the box video of your listing using the 15 photos on Animoto.com

3 – Download the video and save it to you harddrive

4 – “Share” the video on Animoto with your social networking sites

5 – Upload the video to your YouTube.com page and be sure to use your well written copy describing the listing, use your headline in the title section of YouTube, “share” and/or invite your database to view the YouTube video

6 – Go to your blog account and post a blog entry of your listing, write about the listing and include details, give community, school and shopping info and a nice description of the property area, add your photos as a gallery

7 – Copy and paste your blog entry into your Trulia.com blog and upload your video, “share” with your other sites and / or email page to friends

8 – Add blog entry as an “article” on linked in, and set up your Linkedin account to “feed” your blog postings directly to your Linkedin home page

9 – Feed Facebook your blog entry using one of the property photos as the thumbnail, be sure to use your catchy headline for your “status” or “what are you doing”

10 – Tweet out on Twitter your catchy headline with a URL to your blog, YouTube or Facebook, add your database to the “find friends” and invite them to join you on Twitter

Remember, that Twitter allows no more than 140 characters, so if you have a long URL to your blog or video, get a shorter one at: http://www.tinyurl.com.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You can set up your SN sites to feed each other. For example: I can set up my SN sites to feed each other. So one blog posting can be “shared” to Twitter then Twitter will feed Facebook and Plaxo, etc. Also, I can share from my blogger to most all popular SN sites. Here is how I make a posting, in this order:

  1. Post complete informational or entertaining article or video to blog
  2. Share blog post to Twitter which feeds my Facebook and Plaxo, and all other sites via the “addthis” button on my blog. Some blogs like Trulia will have to be added individually.

I know I can make it sound easy, but it doesn’t have to be hard, it just requires you to have your tools in order and be organized with your information. Oh yea, and it requires a little bit of your focused time. But for the potential exposure, I think it is well worth it!
