Marketing “Lifestyles”

Diversity in your MarketingIn this day and time, in our businesses we are all looking for “the one thing”.  That one tool or product that will get our marketing done, bring us prospects, make the sale, clean our house, make us happy….I could go on.  The problem with that concept is that in a diverse business market, there is MORE than just ONE way.  There are MANY.  Many ways to get leads, to market your product, to brand your business, to be happy, to be entertained…get the idea?

I want to talk to you about diversity in your marketing.  Just like there are many types of customers out there, there are also many ways to reach them.  The failure to reach your customer might be in the method you are using.  Look at your market segment.  Are they boomers?  Are they just out of college?  Where do they live?  Country?  City?  Uptown?  Suburbs?  Believe it or not, where your prospect lives tells a big story about their lifestyle and their preferences when it comes to how they make their purchases and how they communicate.

In executing a marketing plan, it is important to be as diverse as the market you serve.  Do not put all your eggs in one basket!  Spread your marketing message out over a number of marketing venues:  social networking, email, print, sponsorships, and good old-fashioned call phones to set up a lunch or one-on-one.  There is business waiting for you in all types of marketing.  Depending upon your target market, you may want to focus on social networking to build relationships, or you may want to use the US Mail to deliver nice business letters offering your services.  You have to know your customer. Hear me!Are you doing something interesting or special?

Are you doing something for the community?

Are you going over and above what your customers expect?

If you are, then how will your customers and contacts, friends and family going to know if you don’t tell them?  My momma taught me growing up the rewards of being humble and in school we were told not to brag or people wouldn’t like us, so sometimes self-promotions feels a bit shameless!  However, in marketing, you have to be bold, you have to be your own best press agent -  and there is a skill to that!  You know what I say – “Marketing is simply telling people what you are doing”.  Now, we can disect that all day long and add to it a million times, but the bottom line is that if you are not doing anything, it is hard to have an interesting marketing message.  And if you ARE doing something, your clients and target audience need to know about it! Here is great insite from Marketing Guru James Roche…we have to get our message down before we get the tools down.  How many of you can relate to this…I know I can!

One thing I see over and over is entrepreneurs making their lives and businesses WAY TOO COMPLICATED! Here’s what I see happening… People get caught up in the marketing TOOLS and forget that it’s the HUMAN CONNECTION that makes a sale. Think about it. Do you know of a business friend who rushed out and bought the latest and greatest marketing tool over the years? The “logic” goes something like this…  View full article »

You have been given one magical wish . . .

A mainstream blogger once asked the question of  thousands of their readers, “If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?”.  Here are a few of the answers:

If you could change one thing in the world today what would it be?

  • I’d make it so people would actually love other people. That would end all heartbreak, crime, war, lawsuits, abuse. Everything.  It’s a lack of love that causes it in the first place.
  • Stop War all over the world
  • War and pedophiles
  • I would remove politics from the world. Every problem would be solved instantly
  • No more hunger

All good answers, but unfortunately, most are nothing more than magical wishes – beyond our control, or ability to really make happen.  Who wouldn’t change world hunger if they could, or stop all wars?  If we had that one wish from the Jeanie in the bottle, we would all make good use of it!  But there is no Jeanie in the bottle, at least not in my house.

Now if you did have just one thing you could change, and possessed the ability to make it happen, the talent, the knowledge, the means, what would that be?  And what kind of long term effect would it have on your life and business?  Did you know that CHANGING ONE THING is all that is necessary in order to bring about a magical effect into your life?  CHANGING ONE THING can reinvent your own reality and thus the reality of those around you.  No Jeanie in the bottle necessary!

Ok, so how?  Is there a formula that successful and powerful people use to make things happen?  The answer of course is yes.  There are numerous “formulas” that you can use to set and achieve your goals for the rest of your life – and all have a few common denominators. From my experience, I know that successful people are masters of their time and their actions, their mind and their decisions.  In order to possess that kind of control, one MUST follow certain routines that have proven to be successful.  You can too.  By following the actions in the list below, you can achieve positive, successful results that go far beyond those of the average person.  Here you go:

Decide What You Want
Step number one, decide exactly what it is you want in each part of your life and in your business. Become a “meaningful specific” rather than a “wandering generality.”

Write It Down
Second, write it down, clearly and in detail. Always think on paper. A goal that is not in writing is not a goal at all. It is merely a wish and it has no energy behind it.

Set a Deadline
Third, set a deadline for your goal. A deadline acts as a “forcing system” in your subconscious mind. It motivates you to do the things necessary to make your goal come true. If it is a big enough goal, set sub-deadlines as well. Don’t leave this to chance.

Make a List
Fourth, make a list of everything that you can think of that you are going to have to do to achieve your goal. When you think of new tasks and activities, write them on your list until your list is complete.

Organize Your List
Fifth, organize your list into a plan. Decide what you will have to do first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and what is less important. And then write out your plan on paper, the same way you would develop a blueprint to build your dream house.  Create a schedule to help you accomplish the things on your list.

Take Action
The sixth step is for you to take action on your plan. Do something. Do anything. But get busy. Get going.   Follow your schedule!

Do Something Every Day
Do something every single day that moves you in the direction of your most important goal at the moment. Develop the discipline of doing something 365 days each year that is moving you forward. You will be astonished at how much you accomplish when you utilize this formula in your life every single day

There are so many distractions in our lives today.  Creating our goals, choosing our plan and working that plan will keep you focussed and consistent and that is the key to success!

Got Money?

Don’t let bad news distract you from the many positive steps you can take each day…

No matter what industry you are in, by the time you arrive at work, you’ve probably been exposed to a barrage of bad news:  more layoffs, bankruptcies, killings, hurricanes, bombings, astronomical gas prices, declining stock prices, decreasing sales…need I go on?

It’s enough that we have to deal with all this stuff just through our contact with the world, so you have to accentuate the positive.

Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by negative economic events beyond your control.  Instead, focus on the many steps within your control you can take to generate sales today and prepare for a more prosperous tomorrow, here some basics of what you can do.

  • Customer Follow-up: start each day by contacting three recent customers and finding out how satisfied they are with their purchases.  Thank them for choosing you and ask them what you can do to make them even happier next time.  You will undoubtedly uncover additional unmet needs while generating valuable leads and referrals.
  • Website: does it contain both open content accessible to all visitors and premium content that has limited access “high-octane” information used as a registration incentive and reward for buying from you?  Are they up to date?
  • Social Media Fun –  Twitter, YouTube and Facebook: share your positive outlook to your friends and followers on your social networking site, look for and provide uplifting content that will make the online world a better place and make friends in the process!  Leverage these marketing outlets to share YOUR story and personality.  And by all means have fun!
  • Synergy: explore ways to add Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Plaxo, Blogger, or any other social media to your overall marketing plan.  Drive visitors to your web site or blog, keep customers informed using on-line collaboration and communications, email and on-line newsletters. Diversify your marketing and spread your marketing message across all available channels.

Bottom line?

  • Keep it real!
  • Focus on what will change the world
  • DO NOT forget to stay in touch with your clients, this is the GOLD!
  • Have fun and love what you do!

I’ve been thinking a lot about marketing 2.0 lately and the relevance it has in our new business economy. Interaction is the word I like to use then talking about the new marketing. Rather than marketing AT people, we are learning to market with people, our clients – prospects, family and friends. Afterall, whatever we are selling we should want even our closest friend to experience it, right? So I say let’s put some feeling into it. I am tired of the generic BLAST that is meaningless to me. Emotional marketing is something that is going to ring my bell. Connect with me. Trip my trigger. Relate to my feelings, my dream and my goals….the marketer kinda has to know me!

We all have those emotional buttons and probably connect through them on a daily basis. We go to Starbucks because we like the feeling, the baristas, the smell, the ambiance – all emotional. We go to the movies or buy CD’s because we connect with the actor, the story or the music, it’s all what makes us feel good. Put on your thinking cap and come up with your own experiences that you can share and relate in your marketing. What 3 experiences could you share in your marketing? How can you reach out to that prospect or client to share on an emotional level in order to build a bridge to your product? How can you bridge the gap in your speaking or coaching or teaching? What story can you share? Do you know your story?

I have been a singer and performer since I was six and it’s my nature to “feel” out the audience. I understand the importance of being able to flow with them, feel what they want, respond to their reaction. This works the same in emotional marketing. Put your feelers out there and get on the level of your client to first get the chemistry flowing! Watch them, their reaction, their response and gear your “performance” to their response.

Just like in performing music, in marketing you have to be real. We have all experienced the vague, unconnected marketing message, and we hate it. We trash it and put spam filters on to prevent it from reaching us! Your marketing message and YOU have to be real. You can’t be false. Emotional, personal, upfront and honest. Even if I get on the stage and lose myself with my drummer and guitar player – but have fun – I will connect with my audience and they will walk away totally vibed! Because I am being true and getting into what I am doing….feeling it.

Emotional marketing has to start with you, it has to start with you first believing in yourself as the primary product. You are selling you. Be real. Be sincere. Then reach out to find where your audience is and give them what they want!

love and peace!
